GhostHunting 101

Peter James Dowling

Not everyone has the strength to scientifically research the paranormal. It is my experience that hunting ghosts can be mentally and physically draining, especially if you work all day and stay up nights investigating places and getting yourself scared all time. It is normal to be afraid of things that cannot be explained, and at times it’s hard for one's mind to make sense of what the eyes perceive and what your ears hear. But don’t forget that the entities feed off your fear, so it is my suggestion that like in everyday life you should face your fears and keep a level head.

As a Certified Paranormal Investigator I must always keep calm no matter how frightened I might become in situations that overwhelm me, especially if the owners or curator is at the haunted locations with us. I mean…how would you feel if suddenly you have scientists running around screaming like Scooby Doo? Not professional! Leave the screaming to the people who hunt ghosts for their own personal entertainment. (Meaning the Rookies)

One word of advice if you are interested in hunting ghosts, “YOU WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE A SPIRIT OR ENTITY FOLLOW YOU HOME FROM A HAUNTED LOCATION, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO!” And always remember to tell the ghosts that they are not welcome to follow you, and to stay where they are at when you are about to leave the haunted location. Because if you don’t, you will have a great chance of being pestered a lot sooner at your home from entities that weren’t there before.

Always have another researcher with you at all times. Four ears and eyes are better than just two. Plus your credibility will increase when you have another witness when situations occur. I have broken this advice many times by going to haunted cemeteries and homes alone. But I have promised researchers from other organizations that I wouldn’t do that again due to safety issues. For instance what would have happened if I fell and hit my head on something, or was attacked by one or more angry entities and I was all alone? I’m sure you get the picture.

Some say the best times for hunting ghosts are 1:00PM – 5:00AM due to less noise and darker light. I agree somewhat to that statement, however you can investigate at anytime of the day or night. It seems that there is no concept of time on the other plane of existence. Remember ghosts haunt 24Hrs a day 7 days a week. I have recorded the best EVPs in the daytime and early morning.

Most of the time ghosts won’t hurt you, but there has been an occasion or two that paranormal investigators have been attacked. I agree to the theory that when a person or animal dies, it still retains their personality and way of thinking. Meaning if you are kind and caring individual now while still alive, you will still be that kind and caring individual after death. I personally remember being kissed on the lips by a ghost in the house we rented in Sandy Creek, NY our first night there. The second night that Cori and I were there, I was slapped hard across the face. Personally, that’s not how I like being awakened in the morning.

I'd like to refine how I feel about what I do by saying, “Ghost Hunting is most of the time boring…with moments of pure terror.” I have spent many hours listening for EVPs and looking at film searching for Orbs, Apparitions, Shadow People or things that just don’t look right. However, the boredom always leaves when I get a “Hit” on a picture or a strange voice from the other side. Remember to always keep an open mind, and always try to disprove and find reasons for things that are unexplainable. Look for drafts from windows, falling insulation from attics etc. No one likes investigators who think everything is haunted. I have met a few and to me they have no credibility and I personally believe that they hurt the study of the paronormal. So if you have what it takes to be a Paranormal Investigator…Welcome aboard Comrade! We need more serious people in this field of discovery.
